In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight, American actor Jeremy Renner, best known for his role as Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, discussed his recovery from a near-fatal snow-plow accident and hinted at the possibility of returning to the Avengers franchise.
Renner, 53, expressed his resilience and strength post-accident, telling ET, “I’m always game. I’m gonna be strong enough, that’s for sure. I’ll be ready. All those guys come to my bedside, and they’ve been with me all along through this recovery, so… if they want me, they could have me. It would be something.”
The actor’s recovery journey, following the January 2023 accident that left him with multiple fractures, a collapsed lung, and other serious injuries, has been remarkable. Renner’s determination to regain his strength has fueled speculation about a potential return to the Avengers franchise.
During the interview on This Life of Mine with James Corden, Renner discussed the strong bond he shares with his Avengers co-stars, emphasizing their continuous support throughout his recovery. Actor Anthony Mackie, in particular, played a significant role, being the first person Renner saw upon regaining consciousness after the accident.
Renner delved into the camaraderie among the original six Avengers actors, shedding light on their matching tattoos that symbolize their shared experience. Despite Mark Ruffalo’s initial reluctance to join in, the group’s playful teasing showcased the enduring friendship and respect they have for each other.
During an interview with Collider, Jeremy Renner opened up about the challenges he faced while portraying Hawkeye in The Avengers. Expressing his confusion, Renner acknowledged the complexity of the film and praised director Joss Whedon for handling the task exceptionally well.
Reflecting on the multitude of characters in the movie, Renner mentioned, “I don’t know how they put that many characters in a movie like that. It’s immense. But, with that, you pass the baton. You get to work with very few of them ‘cause everybody’s got their own thing going on. Someone’s in the air, flying around. I’m on the ground, shooting a bow and arrow.”
Renner conceded that amid the chaos, he had limited insight into the eventual outcome of the movie. He expressed that numerous events were unfolding, leaving him clueless about the overall look and feel of the film. While he usually has a decent understanding of the outcome from having seen a significant portion of it, in this case, he admitted having no idea about the final result.
“I feel like I might be an extra in it. I’m not sure.”
The actor’s uncertainty may have led to some frustration with his character, as he confessed to resorting to peculiar tactics to exit the film. Renner revealed that he even faked heart attacks during the filming of The Avengers, hoping the makers would write off his character, but unfortunately, his efforts were in vain.
