Prakash Jha Recalls Congress Members Tried To Halt Raajneeti's Release: 'They Thought Katrina's Character Was...'
Prakash Jha opened up about his 2010 film Raajneeti and how he had to struggle in order to release the film.

In his career, Prakash Jha has churned out several iconic films like Gangaajal, Satyagraha and Chakravyuh to name a few. However, one of his most ambitious films ever, Raajneeti, inspired by the Hindu epic Mahabharata achieved widespread acclaim. The 2010 Indian political thriller film starred Ajay Devgn, Arjun Rampal, Manoj Bajpayee, Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Nana Patekar among others and was embroiled in a controversy when some members of the Congress Party claimed that Katrina Kaif’s character in the film was inspired by Sonia Gandhi. Prakash Jha recently recalled the struggle he underwent in order to release the film amid the controversy.

Speaking with the news agency ANI, Prakash Jha shared, “I remember when I made Raajneeti, a few members from the Congress party came for the Censor Board screening of the film. They rejected my film and did not give us the certificate. They thought Katrina’s character was inspired by Sonia Gandhi. I moved the tribunal, which ultimately overruled the panel and gave us a certificate to go ahead with the film. I was even ready to take the matter to the Supreme Court as I knew there was nothing wrong with my film.”

Back in 2010, during the promotions of the film, Katrina Kaif had clarified that her character was not inspired by Sonia Gandhi, “I spent some years in England as you all know that my mother is English. Sonia ma’am also has a foreign connection. She wears saris, I too wear saris in the film, so people connected, which is quite logical. I can understand it. What I feel most importantly is people should understand that I am not playing Sonia Gandhi because then they will come with a wrong expectation,” she stated.

Not only that, Katrina Kaif had also shared that she followed Priyanka Gandhi for her prep for Raajneeti. She told the news agency, “As part of the basic exercise I followed Priyanka because she is a very strong person. I feel she is very independent and a right blend of modern values, ethics and everything. And she is young.”

Raajneeti’s plot was loosely based on the Indian epic “Mahabharata” and dealt with the power struggle within a political family. It featured an ensemble cast including Ajay Devgn, Nana Patekar, Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, and others. The film received praise for its performances, direction, and complex narrative that mirrors the political landscape of India.
