Martin Scorsese Talks About The Impact Of ‘Popcorn Movies’ On The Industry
According to Martin Scorsese, major studios in Hollywood are chasing to put out 'easier popcorn movies' that have the potential to grow into a franchise.

The release date of filmmaker Martin Scorsese’s upcoming directorial Killers of the Flower Moon is inching closer. Set against the backdrop of the 20th century, the movie features Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in lead roles. Now, during a recent interaction with GQ Magazine, the 81-year-old director spoke candidly about his opinions of the films that Hollywood has been creating in the past few years. For him, “The industry is over." More likely the industry that he was a part of for almost 50 years seems to be biting the dust.

According to him, major studios in Hollywood are currently chasing to put out easier popcorn movies that have the potential to grow into a franchise. He personally believes that not many are ready to place their bet on “individual voices, personal ideas, and thoughts" for a big-budget film. “And what’s happened now is that they’ve pigeonholed it to what they call indies," he said. He also ended up highlighting the current trend of the rise in superhero movies whose major portion rely on special effects. According to Martin Scorsese, these movies have nothing more than “manufactured content" to put forward.

“It’s almost like AI [artificial intelligence] making a film. And that doesn’t mean that you don’t have incredible directors and special effects people doing beautiful artwork. But what does it mean? What do these films, what will it give you? Aside from a kind of consummation of something and then eliminating it from your mind, your whole body, you know? So what is it giving you?" he asked.

Inspired by David Granny’s 2017 book, the plot of Killers of the Flower Moon is based on a true story. Real love crosses paths with unfathomable betrayal as the crime film revolves around the discovery of oil on the tribal land of the Osage Nation. With an improbable romance budding in the background, Killers of the Flower Moon explores a series of inexplicable killings that begin after the discovery of the oil.

While Robert De Niro takes on the role of a convicted felon William Hale, Leonardo DiCaprio lies at the heart of the story in his nephew’s character Ernest Burkhart. Notably, the upcoming movie marks the sixth collaboration between Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese, which included The Departed and The Wolf of the Wall Street among others. Killers of the Flower Moon is scheduled to be released theatrically on October 20.
